Winter is upon us and for me, that means severely dry itchy skin. Each year it is the same thing. As my humidity levels plummet in the house, my skin becomes extremely dry. The more I age, the worst it seems to get and this year it was so dry the skin on my face started itching and flaking off. Ugh.
I was so frustrated when trying to apply my makeup. Instead, of that perfectly flawless coverage we all look for, I looked like a dirty lizard in a rainstorm. Nobody wants to look like that!
The first thing I did was head to my cupboard, where I grabbed my organic rolled oats. I use rolled oats for many of my winter formulations because it is great at removing dead skin cells and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Oats also contain a compound called saponins, which are natural cleansers for your skin.
My next ingredient is roses. Roses are great for aging skin and contain high vitamin C and E. They also stimulate collagen which makes it a perfect ingredient for any aging skin creation. For this recipe, I used Rosehip oil, Rose Geranium Essential Oil and dried rose petals.
Carrot Essential Oil is known to repair damaged skin and has amazing restorative properties.
The last part of my cleanser includes honey. Honey is extremely moisturizing and contains anti-inflammatory properties.
The best part about this cleanser for me is that it contains no water and therefore lasts a month or more in my bathroom and does not require refrigeration. I use it daily to leave my skin smooth and hydrated.
Ultimate DIY Face Cleanser for Aging Skin
2 Tbsp. Ground Rolled Organic Oats
2 Tbsp. Ground Rose Petals
1 Tsp. Rosehip Seed Oil
5 drops Rose Geranium Essential Oil
3 drops Carrot Essential Oil
Honey
Grind your rose petals and oats. I use my coffee grinder, but you can use a food processor, blender or mortar and pestle.
Combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly. Add the honey until a paste is formed. You can store this cleanser in a jar away from direct sunlight or heat for thirty days.
To use, simply place a small amount into your hand. This is where I add a little bit of water to thin out the mixture. Gently rub this mixture onto your face and neck area. I will let this mixture sit on my face for a few minutes (I usually brush my teeth during this time) then I rinse it off with warm water.
That’s it! Finish your nightly beauty routine as normal with moisturizer and you are all set.
