Mindfulness is about being present. Part of being present is bringing all your senses to focus on what is going on with your body. One of the perfect times to do this is when you take a shower.
When we let go of our thoughts, we allow new ideas to come in. My best ideas come to me when I’m in the shower. That’s because I have created a ritual around my shower and use this time to practice my mindfulness.
The first time my guy ever was in the bathroom when I was taking a shower, he told me that he’d never seen anyone take a shower as I do. That’s because I’m present while I’m showering. It’s my time to unwind and let all the stress of the day wash away.
A few of my favorite shower friends include an aromatic soap like The Right to Shower body wash (I use Joy) and my exfoliating bath gloves. Neither of these is necessary to be present in the shower, but I certainly enjoy them. I use the Right to Shower Soap and Body Wash because I love supporting companies that do good in the world, and this one does.
Your mindfulness challenge for this week is to take a shower.
The moment you step into your shower, make an effort to stay present.
Before you do anything else, stand under the water and let the water surround your body.
Notice how the water feels as it covers your skin. Take a few moments to do a body scan and notice how the water feels on each part of you.
Think about how the water is washing away your stress of the day. If you prefer, you can bend over and let the water wash down your back. Imagine all your stress rolling down your back and off the top of your head.
Next, place your soap in your hands. Let your senses take note of the scent of your soap.
What feelings come to mind as you take in the smell of your soap?
As you lather up and apply your soap, notice how each body part feels.
If you use exfoliating gloves, put them on. Gently exfoliated your skin.
Notice how that feels. I envision that I’m removing negative vibes as I’m exfoliating, leaving only good positive vibes on my skin.
Rinse and let go of any remaining stress your body feels.
As you step out of the shower to dry off, notice how your body feels.
If you practice this regularly, I guarantee you will start to feel less stress and more relaxed.
