Honey is one of the most popular things you can find in anyone’s kitchen cabinet. Most of us think of honey as the golden river covering our freshly baked biscuit. However, it’s much more than that. Honey by itself has many uses and healing properties. However, if you want to get the most bang for your buck, try Manuka Honey.
What is Manuka Honey?
It is sourced from New Zealand (You know the first country who wised up and let women have their right to vote). Those lovely little bees spend their days pollinating the manuka plant and producing the most potent honey on the planet.
It’s packed with vitamins and minerals. Even better, it has a respectable following for having the best anti-bacterial properties of all honey around. That means it’s great for cuts, burns, scrapes and much more.
Manuka honey also contains Methylglyoxal. That means it also has anti-viral properties as well, which helps eliminates infections caused by the flu.
How I use Manuka Honey.
I am one of those individuals that going to the doctor is my last resort when I’m sick. If I can take care of myself at home I will. Also, because I have Lupus, I have a lower immune system than the normal person. What this means is I catch any viral or bacterial infection that comes within a 5-mile radius of me. Then I spend six to eight weeks getting over it.
For years I get sick at the exact same times during the cold and flu season. Usually my first will be right after Labor Day. Where I stay sick until the first of November. My next comes right after the Christmas holidays for another lovely six weeks. Then I usually get a small dose of about two weeks in March or April time frame.
For the past two years, I’ve been on a personal goal not to spend several months out of my year down with sneezing, sore throats, coughing, earaches, and congestion. I’ve tried about everything there is to try. My go-to has always been a shot of Jack Daniels with lemon juice. That is until I came across Manuka Honey.
The first time I tried it I was already a few days into my cold. I had head congestion, sore throat, and sneezing. Then I felt it start going to my chest. This is where it usually sits for weeks. Not this time. I started taking three doses a day of my manuka honey concoction, within a few days I noticed I was getting better.
The next time I felt my symptoms starting I immediately started taking my concoction and shazam! I didn’t get sick at all. In fact, since then, I haven’t gone more than a day or two with any cold or flu symptoms.
A day without a friend is like a pot without a single drop of honey left inside.” – Winnie the Pooh
So, what is my home remedy?
1 tsp Manuka Honey
1 juice of lemon or 2 tbsp. Apple Cider Vinegar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Mix all the above in a warm glass of water and drink. Do this twice a day, once before breakfast and another before bedtime. Sometimes I may even add a third cup in the middle of the day if I notice my throat starting to hurt.
Now, I’m not suggesting that you not go to the doctor if you aren’t feeling well. You should always do what you feel is best for you. However, this is how I take care of colds and flus and what works for me.
