A year ago, I was in a job that was not a good fit for me. Because of this, I felt my life was unbalanced. Most of my career life, I’ve been happy and excited to go to work. However, this job made me dread getting in my car each day. I started to question my abilities and noticed that my confidence was beginning to suffer. For me, I need to create, be challenged, and have value in what I’m doing. That wasn’t happening with this career choice.
My new year resolution for last year was to get my life back in balance. I made goals to support this decision, and I quit the job that I knew wasn’t right.
Balance comes in the moment you stand up for the life you truly want by making choices that align with that life. – Unknown
The following are the seven areas of our lives and how they look when they are balanced:
Social & Family Relationships
Your relationships with your friends, family, and acquaintances leave you feeling happy and whole. You connect with others and are involved in social group settings.
Career & Education
Going to work each day is rewarding. The environment at work or school is positive and leaves you feeling content. You have a healthy work and life balance.
Money & Personal Finances
Financially, you are secure, and your bills are all paid. You are always on top of what is in your bank account. Possibly, you even have the financial freedom to do whatever you choose.
Physical Health & Recreation
You have a balance between how much you work and relax in your life. Physically, you feel at your best and exercise regularly. Spending time having fun or being creative is a priority, and you have hobbies that bring you happiness.
Life’s Routine Responsibilities
Daily routines and chores do not bother you to complete. Your home is well-cared for, and you finish tasks on time.
Giving Back to Society & Contribution
You show support to others and are always encourage them to be their best. Positivity radiates from you. You feel confident that you are leaving a meaningful legacy to those around you.
Mental, Emotional & Inner Wellbeing
You can handle your emotions and feel mentally strong. Spiritually, you feel invested and healthy. You are content, confident, and secure in the person you are.
Your mindfulness challenge for this week, month, and year is to create a life of balance.
- Sit by yourself away from any distractions and think about these seven areas of your life. I created a worksheet for you to use that you can print or download here.
- Starting at social & family relationships, work your way down through each statement, taking time to reflect on each one.
- Rate each statement as to where you are at presently. (Balanced = 10; Unbalanced = 1).
- When you have finished with all seven areas, go back to your scores. Find the one with the lowest score (if there are more than one, choose the area you want to work on the most). This is your area of focus for the new year.
- Write down that area on your worksheet.
- Take any additional time you need to reflect on this area.
- Be specific about what your goal will be.
- What steps do you need to take to make this area of your life more balanced?
- Next, write a personal statement about this specific area and include the steps you are going to take to reach this goal.
- Now put this personal statement in a place where you can see it each day. At the end of every day, ask yourself if you have done something that day that will help create balance in your chosen area.
- Once you have balanced out that specific area, start working on another.
Remember, creating a balanced life is an ongoing process, but one that will bring you great rewards.
