When my guy told me he’d gotten us in as a vendor for a Schwagstock Festival (A Grateful Dead Tribute Band), I immediately was ready to go. I’m always prepared for a new adventure. I’d never been to anything like this before. Many times, throughout my life, I wondered if I was born to hippies. I thought maybe they couldn’t take care of me, so they left me on the doorstep of my parents, who raised me. While that probably isn’t true, I am a hippie at heart.
It was a great experience. I met some of the most interesting free-spirited people I’ve ever met in my life. Each conversation I had was so accepting with no judgment. For three days, I was free of criticism from judgmental people, and it felt incredible. Nothing but peace and love.
We had a fantastic time.
Even though I thought I knew what I would need for a festival of this nature, (Yes, I brought the one tie-dye dress that I own), I fell short of all the essentials required to be a real hippie at the hippie festival.
My business is to enjoy and have fun. And why not, if in the end everything will end, right? – Janis Joplin
What do you need to be a proper hippie at a hippie festival?
Camping essentials are necessary, so don’t forget towels, sunglasses, flashlights, batteries, lighters, tent, sleeping bag, water, etc.
Here are the things required that I did not know, but I will make sure I have in our van before our next festival (which by the way is coming up in a month).

Tapestry
Your best tapestry is hanging proudly on or close to your sleeping quarters. Who knew? Each person there had beautiful decorations hanging in the trees or tent. Tapestries can be used for so many things, a skirt, blanket, beach wrap, and much more. Here are some of my choices: VW Van, Mandala, Woodstock, Tie-Dye Peace
Tie-Dye
Luckily, I own one tie-dye dress, but tie-dye is not an option; it’s a necessity. I didn’t see one person in attendance who didn’t have something tie dye they were proudly displaying. I will certainly purchase more tie-dye before our next festival. Here are some of my favorite tie-dye options: Joes USA Tie Dye Shirt, Tie-Dye Maxi Skirt, Long Tie-Dye Dress, Tie-Dye Socks, and don’t forget Headbands which have many uses.
Activated Charcoal Pills
You should have these in your bag no matter where you are traveling. They are used to treat food poisoning and will help with hangovers. It is also great for cleansing your face, keeping your teeth white, filtering water, and any digestive issues you may have. I use Organic Coconut Activated Charcoal.
Baking Soda
Like most hippies, you need to travel light. Bringing things that serve a multitude of ideas is essential. You can cook with it if you need to, but it will also serve as your deodorant, shampoo, face cleanser, toothpaste, tummy soother and to clean whatever you need.
Vinegar
Like the baking soda, vinegar has many things it can do. I mixed some white vinegar up with peppermint and citronella essentials oils to keep the bugs at bay, and it worked. All my cleaning involves white vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is even better. I use it for bug bites, skin toner, digestive issues, and arthritis. While any white vinegar will work for cleaning, for internal use, get apple cider vinegar that is raw and unfiltered like Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar.
Essential Oils
As we were setting up, I heard another hippie vendor mention that they needed to mix up their essential oils for deodorant. I had to think if I grabbed any essential oils. The answer was yes, my peppermint essential oil, and it came in handy. However, I forgot the most important one, Tea Tree essential oil. Tea tree is anti-fungal, antiseptic, and anti-viral and should be carried with you always. Other good choices to bring with you are citronella, lavender, and don’t forget a hippie’s favorite, patchouli.
Coconut Oil
Again, traveling light requires bringing things that have multiple uses. Coconut oil is one of those. Great for cooking but can also be used to mix with your essential oils to apply to bug bites, cuts, and scrapes. Mix with baking soda to make a face cleanser or apply as a moisturizer to your skin and hair. My preferred is Viva Organic Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil.
Hippie Bag
To keep all your hippie stuff. I have two hippie bags that I love and carry with me always. My choice is Tie Dye Cross Body Shoulder Hippie Handbag, Bohemian Embroidered Cross Body Bag, or Happy Flowers Cross Body Bag.
Finally, the last thing you need to bring is a great attitude, an open mind, and a love of music. You can even practice this week’s Mindfulness Challenge; Listen to The Music while you are listening to the bands. Enjoy.
Peace & Love,
Ela
