Memorial Day, 2019. On the way home from breakfast this past weekend, my guy asks me what my mindfulness challenge for this week will be. After a discussion about how proud we are to come from military families, we decided to do a mindful Memorial Day tribute.
While I was preparing this article, I came across the website Mindful Memorial Day. This organization observed its very first Mindful Memorial Day five years ago in 2014. I love that someone had the awareness to come up with the idea of honoring those we’ve lost in this way. If you’ve never heard of this organization, I suggest you go read their page to learn more.
The Mindful Memorial Day observance was conceived as a way to honor fallen warriors through mindfulness. Only by devoting our fullest attention to the sacrifices of this generation of warriors can we begin to appreciate their importance to the citizens and institutions they died to protect.” – Mindful Memorial Day Organization
Here are some ideas of how you can be mindful this Memorial Day:
- Hang a yellow ribbon. Do this with gratitude for those we’ve lost.
- Buy a flag to donate to someone who needs one. Even better, do this for a disabled veteran and help them hang it.
- Donate to one of our military organizations. K9’s for Warriors, Wounded Warriors, Veteran’s Association, or even the Mindful Memorial Day Organizations are a few.
- If you see a military member, go shake their hand and thank them or buy their dinner without them knowing. You can start up a conversation with them and ask them to share a memory about their military experience.
Honoring those that have passed, by honoring those that are still here. Whatever you choose, make certain to give it your full attention.
If you come up with something on your own or have another tradition of honoring our military, please leave it in the comments for us.
We would both like to thank all of those who lost their lives while serving this country and to our family and friends who have served our country past, present, and future. Finally, two both of our fathers, who instilled honor, respect, and love for our country. We thank you all and hope that everyone has a safe Memorial Day.
