In honor of Earth Day I thought it would be great to do a mindfulness challenge that will connect us to nature.
Each day we judge the earth without even thinking about it. From cursing the fly buzzing your food to complaining about mowing the grass, we hardly ever show gratitude to the Earth for everything she has given to us.
Think back to the last time it was pouring down rain and you got soaked. Can you remember how you felt? More than likely you weren’t happy.
What if your doctor informed you that you only had seven days to live? When you walked outside, it was pouring down rain. How would you feel about the rain then? More than likely you would stand and let it soak in. You would be grateful that you had this opportunity to feel the rain on your skin one more time.
If we knew our time was gone, we would stop and enjoy the things in our life that we complain about every day. We’d look at things completely different.
We don’t have to wait until our lives are over to enjoy what’s been given to us. Touching the Earth, or “grounding” is beneficial for our health. It can reduce inflammation, relieve stress, improve circulation and sleep, to name a few.
Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet.” – Thich Nhat Hanh
Touch the Earth, mindfulness challenge:
Take a thirty-minute walk outside each day for the next seven days.
Notice the weather and how it makes your body feel. The trees and flowers around you. How do you feel when you look at them?
Don’t think of anything else, but what you are doing on your walk.
Take off your shoes and walk around in the grass. Do you feel the Earth’s energy as it moves up through you?
At the end of your walk. Sit in silence and touch the Earth. Put both hands on the ground and sit like that for at least five minutes. How does the dirt and grass feel in your hands? Notice how it makes your body feel. What about your mood? Has it improved?
I’m guessing that you are happier and healthier!
