Whether we call it a bucket list or not, most of us have things we want to do in our lives before we “kick the bucket.”
As we grow older, we use these things to bargain with time. Have you ever heard someone say they aren’t ready to die because there are still things they want to do? Yet, you never see them do any of the things they say they want.
When we do this, we are praying for additional time in our lives.
As our time on Earth nears the end, we feel anxious because we didn’t do what we said we wanted to do. It causes us to fear death because we feel regret.
When we live mindfully, we are fully alive each day. We lose that fear. We don’t worry about the future; we are too busy living in this moment.
The time to do the things you want to do is today. Today, not tomorrow or next week, but today.
Your mindfulness challenge for this week is to check off one thing on your bucket list. Hopefully, this will encourage you to continue to check off more.
If you don’t have a bucket list, that’s ok, choose one thing you’ve always wanted to do.
If you have the means and the health, do it. Don’t wait another moment. Book the flight, eat the food, read the book, etc.
If you don’t have the means or health to do some of the things you want to do, you can still do a version of those things.
For instance, let’s say swimming with the pigs in the Bahamas is on your bucket list. You may not have the funds, or your health is not excellent. No problem. Create your own Bahamas in your backyard. Put on your bathing suit, fill up the kiddie pool, make yourself a fruity drink, and sit in the sun. I’m sure if you look hard enough, you can find a pig (or version of) to take to the pool.
Want to skydive? Make your own wings at home and pretend your skydiving around your yard. Your neighbors might think you are crazy, but who cares? You are skydiving. Your living life on your terms.
Don’t wait for “I’ll do it later” to become never. Do it now.
If your bucket list challenge is to start a bucket list, check out this bucket list journal. I bought one many years ago, and I use it to record all my adventures even if those adventures are in my backyard.
