When I was twenty-seven years old, I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Six years later, I was sick of being sick. Like most of us, I had been raised o believe that if you are sick, you can only get medicine from the doctor. For me, that was not true.
My doctor never gave me the answers. I wanted to know why I had this disease and what I could do to help myself. Every doctor I went to told me the same thing. There is no cure. They only wanted to prescribe me medicines to mask the symptoms—steroids, NSAIDs, and pain killers. The more I took, the worse I felt.
That is when I decided to take my health into my own hands.
I started researching holistic health and nutrition. I read tons of books. Out of all those books, these are my picks for the ones that were simple enough to understand, used common sense, and offered solutions that I could do daily. I am living proof that I feel younger and healthier in my forties (soon to be fifty) than I did in my thirties.
You don’t have to have Lupus or any other auto-immune disease to read these. Most of these are suitable for anyone that is wanting a more straightforward holistic approach to their health.

The Immune System Recovery Plan by Susan D. Blum, M.D., M.P.H.
When it came to my health, Susan Blum’s book completely changed my life for the better. I had read plenty of books on illnesses and Lupus, but none that offered help. I always have a Lupus flair during the fall months, not until this book did, I understand why. Vitamin D. That one piece of information made me start feeling so much better. I don’t get near as sick as I used to when heading into winter. I also did the three-week elimination and couldn’t believe the things I was eating that were causing me to feel sick. If you have an auto-immune disease, I highly encourage you to buy this book.
Beauty Detox by Kimberly Snyder
Beauty Detox is the second book that changed my life. Kimberly gives a common sense approach to nutrition. I read this when it first came out and had so many “aha” moments while I was reading it. It’s simple and easy to read and follow. She has an entire line of products and several books. If you enjoy this one, then you will enjoy all of hers.
You the Owner’s Manual by Michael F. Roizen, M.D. and Mehmet C. Oz, M.D.
Every household should have this book for a reference guide. It’s packed full of essential knowledge that you should know. No significant medical words in this one either, it’s easy for all readers to understand (even me).
The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Wormwood
I’ve been asked many times over the years what book I use for my essential oil recipes and basic knowledge. I tell everyone this is the book. It’s the Bible of Aromatherapy. I love it so much I have a digital copy and the paperback version. It has all the information you will need on essential oils and simple, useful recipes for almost any area of your life. I noticed this book on the counter of a co-worker recently. It was twice the size of the one I bought back in 2000. Sure enough, it is updated to include even more information. More information has to be good, right? If you are interested in getting this book, make sure to get the Revised Edition.
The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies by Vasant Lad
If you are interested in holistic health, you need this book. The philosophies described dating back 5,000 years or more. This book is full of wisdom. Offering the history of Ayurveda, cleansing, breathing techniques, healthy all-around habits, and so much more.
Check back often as I update other health and nutrition books that I find helpful. Even as I am finishing up writing this article, I’m reading “Body Love” by Kelly Leveque and loving her take on nutrition and our body as well.
