Welcome to our first challenge of balancing out our third area in our life, career, and education. We spend about a third of our existence working and educating ourselves. Yet, less than half of the people in the world are happy in their job.
I’m pretty easy to please when it comes to working. I need to be appreciated, challenged, and able to create. I’ve learned this about myself, and my favorite jobs throughout my life allowed me to utilize all three of these things. If I don’t have this combination in my career, it doesn’t take long for me to realize that it’s not the job for me.
Even if we are aware of what we need in our jobs (or education), sometimes we still lack the entire picture. That’s when our classmates, colleagues, friends, and family can help us see things that we may be overlooking.
A few years ago, I was very dissatisfied with my job. I’ve always loved to work, but for the first time in my life, I dreaded going to work. The longer I stayed in this job, the more I felt horrible about myself as a person. It was a sales position, and as it turns out, I learned that I’m way too honest to be a salesperson.
I decided to ask those around me their honest opinion and, in return, learned a great deal about myself. It was looking from their perception that opened my eyes to new possibilities, and that directed me to create my blog and find a career that I happen to love.
Success is…knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential, and sowing seeds that benefit others.” ―
Your mindfulness challenge for this week is: Are you happy in your career?
The first thing you need to do is answer that question. So, are you happy in your career choice or education aspirations?
No matter what your answer is, this challenge will help you grow and learn about yourself.
Print our the Self-Feedback Sheet for yourself. Take some time and honestly complete the sheet as to how you see yourself.
At the bottom of your sheet, you will pick five of the most honest people you have in your life. Not the ones who tell you what you want to hear, because that will never help you grow. Instead, send it to any classmate, colleague, friend, or family who you feel will be the most truthful and candid.
Print or download the Feedback Sheet for those you’ve chosen to complete. I’ve created both feedback sheets in Word format for you to easily print, email or copy to adjust as you need. Ask those you’ve chosen to feel out the feedback sheet for you. Explain that you need them to be as honest and objective as they possibly can.
Be specific and give them a date that you would like to have the sheet returned to you. Three to five days should be plenty of time.
When the feedback sheets are returned, take some time to read them.
What I know is, that if you do work that you love, and the work fulfills you, the rest will come.” – Oprah Winfrey
Write down any possibilities that you had not considered. Remain open to their ideas, while staying grounded to your core values.
What thoughts did they provide to you that you could look at differently? Do you have strengths that others see that perhaps you don’t see in yourself? What skills do they see in you that you never considered?
Explore all of their feedback and question yourself with anything that might give a different perspective than your own.
Ask yourself, are you in the career or on the educational path that you should be? And if not, what career or educational path would make you happy?
