Of all the ways to practice self-love by far, my favorite is self-care. The reason is there are so many ways to practice self-care, from the smallest tasks to the most grandiose. Not to mention, it’s super easy! Even if you have only a few minutes to spare each day, there is something you can do to fill your cup and take care of your mind, body, or spirit.
Suppose you choose a carrot over a handful of chips or choose to relax in a bath with a handful of bath salts. These are small gestures that show you care about your wellness. Reconnecting with friends or taking the afternoon to read a book are also ways to practice self-care. The possibilities are endless, and all depend on what nurtures your soul.
When I took the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, I learned about making deposits in our emotional bank account. If others treat us with love, positive behavior, and understanding, our bank accounts are full. However, it can take only a few negative interactions with an individual to wipe out an entire emotional bank account. Thus, leaving us with little or no reason to trust them.
An empty lantern provides no light. Self-care is the fuel that allows your light to shine brightly.” – Unknown
It’s the same with self-care. When we fill our cup by doing little things to replenish ourselves, we feel and act our best. However, if we ignore or refuse to take care of ourselves, thus emptying our cup, we can suffer from burn out, low self-esteem, and negativity.
Your mindfulness challenge for this week is to learn what fills your cup.
Attached is a worksheet for you to use, that you can print here.
There are three main areas of practicing self-care; Physical, Mental, and Emotional. Take a moment to think about each one of these areas.
What are some ways you can take care of yourself physically? Write down at least three.
For example, under Physical, you might choose to replace an unhealthy snack with a healthy one or do one sit up each day. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it’s just for you.
Repeat the above steps for emotional and mental.
Spend some time with each one and ask yourself the following questions:
What benefits can I achieve from doing this self-care daily?
How will I feel if I don’t take this time for myself?
What has kept me from practicing this before?
Explore these questions and look deep inside to see why you don’t feel you deserve this time. Then learn to let go of any false beliefs that are keeping you from practicing self-care.
You are a beautiful warrior; you deserve to replenish your soul as often as possible.
The most powerful relationship you will ever have is the relationship with yourself.” – Steve Maraboli
