Usually, I love to do these challenges in connection with my weekly mindfulness challenge. However, I already completed my mindfulness challenge this week. That’s when I thought, what the hell, wouldn’t it be fun to do a photograph challenge for Valentine’s Day?
I’ve been taking pictures since the seventies. My very first camera was a Kodak pocket camera, and I would give myself photography challenges to learn. I spent an entire week’s chore money on developing my film and guess what came back? An entire roll of banana pictures.
Ever since then, I’ve continually given myself little challenges to spark my creative interest. That is what gave me this idea for all of my readers.

Let’s celebrate love this week and do so, mindfully, by photographing things that remind us of Valentine’s Day.
I have created a worksheet for you to use here. For the next 21 days, use the daily space to apply a picture that you have taken. These are great to keep and refer back to as you learn. You can do this challenge with whatever camera you have available. There is also a space you can use to record special notes (ISO, aperture, depth of field, etc.) or whatever you want to remember about any of these photographs you’ve taken.
The first page and seven-day challenge are to photograph love. When you see love take a picture, it can be anything. Your pet, nature, food, other couples that are showing affection, or even your own special Valentine. If you see love, photograph it.
Your second challenge will be to photograph hearts. If you look hard enough, you will find hearts everywhere you turn in the world. Get creative and look to see what hearts you can find! Even if you have to create your own.
Your final challenge will be to photograph shades of red. I gave myself this challenge years ago, and it was so fun to notice a specific color. Once you put it in your mind that you are looking for something in the shade of red, you will be surprised how many things you go by each day that you don’t notice.
Again, have fun with this! Stay mindful, by noticing how each of these challenges makes you feel. What comes to mind as you photograph love, hearts, and red? Make sure to record what you learned over these 21 days.
Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything. – Aaron Siskind
